Frequently Asked Questions
Understanding the requirements for BLS certification is essential for healthcare professionals. We've answered the most common questions to help you select the right course.
What is the difference between BLS and CPR?
While often used interchangeably, "CPR" can refer to a basic course for lay-rescuers. BLS (Basic Life Support) for Healthcare Providers is a more advanced, professional-level certification. A BLS course includes all the skills of CPR but adds critical training on team dynamics, multi-rescuer response, and the use of advanced breathing devices (like a bag-mask).
Who is required to have a BLS certification?
BLS certification is a standard requirement for most healthcare professionals. This includes, but is not limited to, nurses, doctors, paramedics, EMTs, dental professionals, pharmacists, and other personnel who work in a clinical or hospital setting.
How long does a BLS certification last?
All American Heart Association AHA BLS certifications are valid for two years. To maintain your certification, you must complete a BLS renewal course before your card's expiration date. Both our blended learning courses are valid for initial certification or renewal.
What topics are covered in a BLS course?
Our AHA BLS courses cover a comprehensive range of critical skills, including:
- High-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants
- Proper use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
- Effective team dynamics in a multi-rescuer resuscitation
- Relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking)
- Use of a bag-mask device for rescue breathing
What is HeartCode® BLS? HeartCode®
BLS is the American Heart Association's blended learning program. It allows you to complete the cognitive portion of the course (Part 1) through a self-paced, online module. After finishing the online part, you must attend a mandatory, in-person BLS Skills Review (Part 2) with a certified instructor to practice and be evaluated on your hands-on skills.
